Community bands together to build home for Delaware veteran

A humble abode on a quiet street in Georgetown will soon be home for Oscar and his family. (His last name is not being used in accordance with military privacy practice). He spent ten years as an army ranger and was injured in the Middle East.

He’s suffering from a brain injury, post traumatic stress disorder and a bad back. However, Habitat for Humanity, Home Depot and loads of community volunteers are bringing him some relief with a new house.

Edward Wade, the Home Depot store manager in Lewes says,”It’s just part of our values.”

Oscar says, “To have this happen to us is just amazing, outstanding, spectacular, and fantastic. There’s not enough words to express what I have to feel.”

We’re told Oscar has good and bad days with his health. In planning for the future, his new home is completely flat with no steps leading to the front door. There is also a bathroom accessible to people with disabilities.

Oscar says, “It’s kind of unfortunate that I have to look forward to a house like that, but I’m happy at the same time. I’ll have the ability to get in and out of my house without any problems.”

The home is also energy-efficient.

Kevin Gilmore, the executive director of the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity says, “The H-vac system is ductless and the heat is on demand for hot water. We’re trying to set people up for success and also make it so their utility bills are affordable.”

Oscar and his family will also pay zero interest on the mortgage. Instead of a down payment, he and his family have to complete 200 sweat equity hours working on their home. They’ve already surpassed the requirement.

His family has added their special touches, like these scripture verses on the floor of every room.

His wife Delfina says, “It’s a way to keep us close. Without God, we wouldn’t have any of this. I believe that showing my children that and having these blessings on stone in concrete is just great.”

Volunteers plan to have the home finished by December so Oscar and his family can spend Christmas in their new house.
