City officials in Lewes oppose offshore drilling

Members of the Lewes City Council and the Mayor are working together to fight drilling off the Atlantic coast.

A vote by the city council this week made Lewes the first municipality in Delaware to voice their opposition to the offshore drilling process.

Congressmen John Carney of Delaware, has sent several letters to the Department of Interior also opposing the drilling. He says that in order for the process of finding drilling locations to begin, seismic surveys are done.

Carney says that process could have a major impact on the fishing industry in the area because the seismic tests create a lot of noise and can scare fish away.

However If the plan is approved by the government, seismic testing could begin as early as 2017.
