BREAKING: Bus driver arrested for suspected drunk-driving

Maryland State Police say a bus driver operating a charter bus full of students was taken into custody by troopers for suspected drunk driving.

Apparently, chaparones on the bus took notice of the bus driver’s actions, and called 911. Maryland State Troopers responded shortly after the call.

47 ABC has reached out to school officials and law enforcement, and received a statement from Tracy Sahler of Wicomico County Public Schools.

Sayler says “Bennett Middle School students were transported to and from Calvert County today (Wednesday) for a field trip. On the return trip, the charter bus was stopped in Talbot County. The students are safe, and are awaiting another bus driver to arrive to drive them back to Bennett middle school. Law enforcement is involved and further details must come from law enforcement. Parents were notified of the late arrival time by an automated call from school, and parents will be updated with further details. Student safety is our highest priority.”

47 ABC also spoke with Superintendent Dr. John Fredericksen says the bus contained dozens of 6th and 7th graders, but could not estimate exactly how many people were on the bus.

Dr. Fredericksen tells 47 ABC the driver worked for Dawson Bus Service Inc., out of the Dover, Delaware area, and was not employed by the school district.

Students have returned back to Bennett Middle. Officials say no injuries or collisions were reported.
