Worc. Co. takes a step forward on Showell Elem., but a small one

Worcester County board of education officials met with the board of county commissioners Tuesday to discuss the design phase for a new Showell Elementary School. This after a feasibility report said the school was overcrowded, had outdated utilities and was too outdated to be renovated.
The proposed plan is to build a new school and board of education officials asked the commissioners for almost $600,000 to have initial plans drawn up.
However, the commissioners only gave them half of what they were looking for forcing the board of ed to go back to the drawing board.
Commissioner Joe Metricic told 47 ABC he did not agree with the decision not to give the board their full requested amount.
“I felt that we kind of held their hands a little bit, tied their hands I guess I should say by cutting their money down for the design portion of the school, Metricic said.
Without the full amount, Worcester Board of Education superintendent Dr. Jerry Wilson said his personnel will have to go back to the drawing board.
“Our facilities team will go ahead and examine what it is we’ve been provided and then we’ll go back and talk to the board of education about his and see what next steps we’ll have,” Wilson said.
He added that they’ll have a plan on what to do moving forward by their next board of education meeting on Oct. 20.
