Two officers injured after being dragged by vehicle in Dover

The Dover Police Department say, two of their own are currently recovering after being dragged by a vehicle in a Dover shopping center.

According to reports, officers were responding to a loitering/suspicious subject complaint, at the Hamlet Shopping Center on Walker Road, just after 2:15 AM Thursday morning. A store employee reportedly told police 28-year old Christopher Brewer, of Dover was loitering in the parking lot, throwing trash out of his vehicle window, and refusing to leave the property.

Apparently, Patrolman Anthony D’Errico and Willie Johnson arrived at the scene and found Brewer reclined in the driver seat of a Chrysler 200. Officers believed Brewer was either sleeping or under the influence so they attempted to wake him up by knocking on the window and giving him verbal commands. Police say, he then suddenly began moving within the vehicle, possibly reaching for an item. Police report that, officers opened the driver side door to take him into custody, but he shut the door on the officers. Another attempt was apparently made to remove Brewer from the vehicle but, he reportedly put the vehicle in reverse and quickly accelerated. Reports say, both officers were dragged across the parking lot by Brewer, who then fled after putting the car in drive.

Brewer reportedly led other arriving officers on a brief chase that ended after he struck a curb which disabled his vehicle. He was arrested in the area of Lakewood Place and Ross Street.

According to reports, D’Errico was treated for multiple wounds and abrasions and Johnson is currently being treated for a leg injury at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital.

D’Errico began his career in 2014 and Johnson has served two years with the Dover Police Department.

Brewer has been charged with more then six different charges including first and second degree vehicular assault. Police say, it is possible that more charges will follow as the investigation continues.
