SU Police say “run, hide, fight”

Salisbury University Police take measures to prevent an on-campus shooter. However, their associate chief of police says unfortunately these incidents can happen, and when they do, folks need to act fast.
Lt. Brian Waller says, “If there is a shooter in your building, and you have the opportunity to get out of the building, they’re on the other end of the hallway, you run. You leave the building. You leave the grounds.”
Lieutenant Waller says everyone should abide by the rule “run, hide, fight.” Apparently, the mentality of locking a door and hiding can leave someone like a sitting duck. The first instinct should be to run away.
Law enforcement officials say there are typically seven to eight minutes between the first shot and last shot fired and that time can be used for potential victims to get away.
Andy Guyther, a student at Salisbury University says, “I know this sounds kind of weird, but I kind of keep a contingency plan in my head. What am I going to do in some kind of crazy situation? You know the more and more it happens, the less crazy it sounds, the less crazy you feel coming up with a contingency plan.”
The Salisbury Police Department is also working on providing a new app for students that will include GPS capabilities, campus alerts, and ultimately work towards meeting the goal of increasing safety.
