“State Of Emergency” declared in transgender community

Wednesday marked week three of what the transgender community is referring to as a State Of Emergency.
This was reportedly declared at a convention for transgender activists held after an apparent uptick of violence against transgender individuals, according to Delaware group CAMP Rehoboth. The non-profit is a gay and lesbian community service organization that serves the Eastern Shore.
Sal Seeley is the Program Director of CAMPsafe, which is the CAMP Rehoboth HIV/AIDS prevention program. According to Seeley, the State Of Emergency is more of an awareness initiative and will remain a part of the community until members feel accepted.
According to the HumanRightsCampaign.org, a study finds there have been at least 21 transgender individuals murdered in 2015. The study found there were at least 13 reportedly killed.
Seeley explains the State Of Emergency urges folks to be conscientious to what is going on and to be an ally to the community.
“If you hear jokes, if you see a transperson being assaulted…stepping in and taking a chance and making a stand that this type of violence and discrimination is not going to be tolerated.” He explains.
Camp Rehoboth says they have a number of events lined up to promote transgender acceptance and support. For more information, click here.
