State audit: ‘Questionable’ accounting at 2 charter schools

(AP) – A state auditor’s office has found that two charter schools in Wilmington may have broken spending rules.

The audits released Wednesday say Delaware College Preparatory Academy couldn’t fully justify about $23,000 in reimbursements, while Kuumba Academy may have failed to follow state spending procedures.
    
The audits say Delaware College Preparatory Academy’s reimbursements of more than $11,000 to school board president Yardise Jones were “highly questionable.” The audits also say some of executive director Angela Dennis’ more than $18,000 reimbursements didn’t come with supporting documentation to justify payments.
    
At Kuumba, the audits say head of school Sally Maldonado, assistant head of school Tamara Price and a custodian received payments on top of their salaries.
    
State auditor Tom Wagner says he hopes the report shows the need for better fiscal accountability.
