President Obama addresses International Association of Chiefs of Police conference

Issues over violence and gun control have become a frequent topic of national discussions in the U.S. President Obama continued the conversation in his address to the International Association of Chiefs of Police at their annual conference in Chicago on Tuesday.
President Obama says he rejects, “Any narrative that seeks to divide police and communities they serve.”
He discussed building trust between police officers and communities and also echoed a call for universal background checks on anyone who buys a gun. He also stressed the importance of gun control laws.
47 ABC spoke with H.L. Hughes, the chief of police in Georgetown on Tuesday. He says he pleased to see this discussion nationally and would like to see the same on the local level.
Chief Hughes continues, “I do believe in local if you will, you know that’s where things start. However, we have this thing called the constitution which is a pretty neat document. We have to keep the second amendment in mind, and the rights of our people to have weapons. However, we need to have some sensible solutions to who has those kinds of weapons. I think we need to address that.”
