Parts of Assateague National Seashore still closed from storm

Many areas of Delmarva were hit hard last week by flooding, and are now giving us a better picture of their current state of recovery.

The Virginia side of the Assateague Island National Seashore suffered significant beach erosion. Right now, their over-sand vehicle zone and two of their main beach parking lots are closed. Officials say it’s going to take a lot of work to get these areas back up and open to visitors because so much sand has been moved.

Casey Custer, the facility operations manager says, “Typically you’re going to take something like a front end loader and some skid steers. You’re going to scrape the material from the top and any areas where the base is destroyed or gone. You’re going to have to cut those areas out, add new fill in, compress that fill, and you have to add shells to the top for that driving surface.”

We’re told the closed areas of the park could re-open by next month.
