Laurel Edges Rival Delmar For 2nd Straight Season

The Laurel football team claimed bragging rights over their arch rival Delmar for the 2nd straight season with a 38-29 win Monday afternoon. The win improves the Bulldogs to 2-2 on the year, while the loss drops the Wildcats to 0-4.
Laurel received the opening kick off and promptly went 60 yards down the field and capped off the drive with a short 1 yard touchdown run by Shyheim Holden. The Wildcats would then have the answer, as they put together a long drive of their own, and finished it with a 7 yard touchdown run by Kavon Trader off the right side after he took the option pitch from Jimmy Adkins. Both teams continued to run the ball effectively from there, as it was the ‘Dawgs turn to move the ball. After getting pushed back initially, quarterback Perez Nichols would drop a dime to Howard Straughn for a 30 yard pick up. A few plays later, Laurel would finish the drive with another touchdown run by Holden. Then after a quick 3 and out by the Wildcats, Laurel would score the final points of the half after Roman Heniquez booted a 41 yard field goal.
Laurel then opened the second half by pushing their lead to 24-7 after Skylar Chaffinich anticipated the pitch on an option, intercepted it and took it 81 yards the other way for the score. The Wildcats would then answer after Trey Henry broke loose up the middle for a 50 yard touchdown run.
Laurel would then take a 24-15 lead into the 4th quarter, and be able to continue to score to close out the game. Laurel returns to work Friday when they host Indian River, while Delmar will be back on the field Saturday when they travel to play Lake Forest.
