Lake Forest Wins In The Last Second Over Delmar
The Lake Forest Spartans took the field on Saturday afternoon against the Delmar Wildcats for their homecoming match up, but the last second of the game is what everyone will remember. The Wildcats were looking for their first win of the season while the Spartans look to get another Henlopen conference win.
It was a slow start for both teams, in fact, the entire game was pretty slow on both sides of the ball because of the defensive plays on the field. The Wildcats took a 6-0 lead after one quarter of play, but the Spartans managed to get a touchdown of their own in the second quarter to give Lake Forest a 7-6 lead after one half play.
The second half is where things got interesting between Delmar and Lake Forest. The Wildcats posted the first touchdown of the second-half to take a 14-7 lead after scoring a two-point conversion. Then, to start out the fourth quarter, Lake Forest managed to get a touchdown on their own, however they did complete their 2-point conversion, so the Spartans would trail 14-13.
Delmar took over possession of the ball with about six minutes left on the clock and continued to maintain possession until 3:22 was left for the Lake Forest Spartans to get one last shot at the end zone. With the clock continuing to run down, Lake Forest continue to make plays on the field getting them closer and closer to their victory. The Wildcats defense came up with a huge stop on first down just to yards off the goal line – the Wildcats thought it was fourth-down and that they would take over possession of the ball, however the Spartans had gained a first down in a couple plays prior, ultimately leading to a third down.
With just one second left on the clock, the Spartans knew their fate would come down to a field goal attempt – as they trailed by just one point. The Wildcats had been close to blocking the Spartans kicks all game long, and they came up with a huge block that, we thought, ended the game. With no time left on the clock, Delmar’s entire sidelines poured onto the field and they began to pile up on one another to celebrate their first win of the season, but not for long. That’s because number Austin Aguilar, the Lake Forest kicker, picked up the football and ran it into the end zone, he said he did not know that it would be a touchdown until he saw the refs hands go up in the air signifying that Lake Forest had just scored a touchdown and won the game. At that moment, the entire Lake Forest team charged into the end zone picking up their hero of the day as Lake Forest grabs a huge and unforgettable homecoming victory, 19-14 over the Wildcats.
