Kent County Slides By Stephen Decatur
The weather has continued to play a major role this season so far in high school football and it would continue this Friday night. Just for short days ago, Stephen Decatur was at home taking on North Caroline in a make-up game after getting rescheduled due to bad weather conditions last Friday. Tonight, the Seahawks traveled up to Worton, Maryland, as they took on the Kent County Trojans.
Both teams took the field, followed by a huge cloud covering the sky and would eventually bring rain, lightning, and thunder leading to a major delay. After nearly 2 hours, both teams geared up and took the field despite lightning still being in the background of play. The wet weather conditions definitely played a role throughout the first half – a lot of players were slipping and falling leading to costly mistakes across the field.
Stephen Decatur got on the board first and this one, Darion McKenzie led his team on the first drive hurdling a player from Kent County. Just a few short plays later, Dryden Brous scored the first touchdown of the game to give the Seahawks a 9-0 lead. On the other side of the ball, Stevie Curran came up with some big plays of his own putting the Trojans on the board to cut the Seahawks lead to just two points in the first quarter, 9 – 7.
In the second quarter, McKenzie pushed the rock into the end zone following a huge return off the ensuing kickoff from Brous to help the Seahawks take a 15-7 lead. Decatur continued to add onto their lead and eventually would take a demanding lead in the second quarter, but the Trojans would not go down easily.
At halftime, the Seahawks had a 22-19 lead over the Trojans, and the second half grind continued throughout the game. Kent County had a huge third quarter putting up 20 points shutting out Decatur to take a 39-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Seahawks were determined to get the win on the road over the Trojans, and would push the rock late in the game looking to get the comeback victory. Decatur would get back with in five points, but they fell short as the Trojans hold on for a big win at home, 39-34, the final.
