How to keep your home safe and warm this fall

We’re nearing the time of year when a blanket may not be enough and you’ll want to turn up the heat, with that in mind. some important safety tips.

The Delaware Fire Marshall’s office says to never run a space heater unattended,  have them checked every year to make sure they’re working properly.

They also say the most dangerous set up, is a space heater with an extension cord.
Don’t ever cover an extension cord, because they need to breathe.

“They’ll grab a normal household extension cord and that has a tendency to overheat and possibly fault and nearby combustibles such as rugs and things like that on fire,” says Harry Miller Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal at the Sussex County Division of the office of the Sate Fire Marshal.

The office also wants to remind those who have wood burning stoves, to be cautious of disposing of their contents.

They say 24 hours may not be long enough before putting in a trash can, so to be sure, douse them with water before tossing them.
