Delmarva municipalities prepare for heavy rain, and winds

Municipalities across Delmarva, are preparing ahead of the wet weather in our area.
The City of Salisbury says the Public Works Department have been getting their emergency equipment ready, including generators, pumps, and chainsaws, and are removing leaves from drainage areas. The front that is moving through our area, is expected to bring several inches of rainfall through the weekend. The Town of Berlin has been in preparation mode ahead of the storm, and is offering free sandbags to help residents fight flooding. “Our employees are aware of the approaching storm and have been put on notice they may be called in. Critical utility generators have been topped off with fuel. Our fallen tree response crew has sharpened its chain saws,” said Mayor Williams. “We are working closely with Worcester County Emergency Services personnel to keep an eye on the storm and the hurricane’s path of travel,” he added. “As we have in previous years, we’ve rented large pumps to help with flooding. This year we’re also trying something new, we’re providing sandbags for residents to use. The sandbags have been placed at Burbage Park, 309 William St. and at Henry Park, located on Flower St. starting this afternoon,” stated Town Administrator Laura Allen. “We’ll monitor the usage and put more out as needed,” she added. Town officials advise residents to have an emergency kit ready with flashlights, batteries, cash, food and water.
The Town of Ocean City says they too are monitoring the weather, and are readying the Town. They are expecting flooding with all the rain. They have decided to close the inlet parking lot starting at mid-night on Saturday. “Residents and property owners in ALL Zone A and B locations should prepare for moderate to severe flooding beginning in the early morning hours tomorrow, October 2” says Communications Manager Jessica Waters. Residents can prepare by tying up water vessels, removing outdoor furniture, and securing objects that may blow or float away. They plan on keeping residents informed through their website, and social media. Liberal Leave is in effect for town employees for Friday.
In Accomack County, the Department of Emergency Management says they are watching Hurricane Joaquin, and preparing for the effects that could come to the Shore. They are warning residents to prepare for high winds, high water levels, downed trees, and power outages. They also advise to have a preparedness kit ready to go, which should include staple foods, medication, flashlights, and water.
