Bishopville man arrested for drug activity, firearm possession

Richard Mumford, 19, of Bishopville

Police in Berlin say they arrested Richard Tye Mumford Jr., 19, of Bishopville, Md., after a caller tip of apparent drug activity in the parking lot of Bay Terrace Apartments.

Authorities say around 11:30 A.M. Thursday, Mumford was apparently inside a vehicle parked in the area, when he was approached by police.

According to the police report, Mumford and another male reportedly tried to walk away from the officers before they were stopped. Police say they detected the odor of marijuana on him and within the vehicle.

Police say Mumford was then searched, and officers recovered several packets of a substance that was identified as Heroin, as well as U.S. currency, and a cellular phone. Police say a later search of the vehicle revealed additional Heroin packets, more currency, and three other cellular phones.

Police also reportedly seized a Femaru RT37M .380 handgun, and six .380 Caliber bullets. The suspect’s vehicle was also impounded for further investigation.

Mumford was reportedly taken into custody and charged with Possession of Heroin, Possession of Heroin with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Regulated Firearm in commission of drug related crime, and other charges.

Mumford is currently being held on $25,000.00 bond. The investigation is ongoing.
