Accohannock tribe invites public in

The first pow-wow for the Accohannock Tribe under new chief Clarence “lone wolf” Tyler was held this weekend in Marion.

The 22nd annual pow-wow was held in part to honor Tyler, but also as a tribute to former chief Rudy Hall, who passed away earlier this year.

Pow-wows are used as family reunions for Native Americans, however everyone is viewed as family.

Since the pow-wow is a public event it serves as a chance to meet new family members, as well as see old ones.

Unfortunately, not everyone has received the Accohannock Tribe well,  that’s why the pow-wow also serves as a chance to raise awareness.

“Too many times people look at the tv and see how we’re portrayed and by us having us pow-wows and inviting the public to come in we are offering them the truth,” said Diane Baldwin, pow-wow chairman.

For anyone interested in learning more about the tribe, tribe officials encourage people to head to their website.
