Town officials support entrepreneur’s application to grow medical marijuana

Medical Marijuana is growing in popularity across the country, and it could be on its way to Federalsburg. That is if an application that town officials have voted to support gets approved.

After a 14 to 1 vote, officials in Federalsburg are supporting a businessman who wants to grow medical marijuana in town with a letter explaining they’re on board.

Bill Beall, Mayor of Federalsburg says, “I’d love to see them come here. We’ve got a perfect location.”

If approved, the medical marijuana would be grown in the Frank M. Adams industrial park and would bring new jobs to Federalsburg.”

Beall says, “Approximately 40 jobs with an average salary of $50,000 each.” There will also be about a five to six million dollar investment into the building where the marijuana will be grown.

In May, Governor Larry Hogan signed a law legalizing the personal consumption of medical cannabis. 47 ABC has been told the state’s receiving numerous applications, but there are a limited number of licenses. There are 15 for cultivation, 15 for manufacturer infused products, and 95 for dispensaries. Town officials hope they can help push this application through with their letter of support.

Beall continues, “It helps this company when they go to get a license to know that everyone is on board within the county and the town.”

However, some community members don’t want drugs grown in their neighborhood. Some say it could give young people the wrong idea, making them think it’s okay to smoke marijuana.

In response to that, Beall says, “You know it’s not your daddy’s pot.”

Beall believes this can help those in pain.  He goes on, “This is a valuable medicine that they are growing and it’s actually a pharmaceutical product. It helps so many people.”

Town officials in Federalsburg are encouraging the county’s commissioners to also write a letter of support.
