The Pontiff takes Philly: Day 1 recap

After setting foot in the nation’s birthplace, the Holy Father did one of the things he does best, as he celebrated mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
There he delivered a message that he hopes will inspire younger members of the church.
“One of the great challenges facing the Church in this generation is to foster in all the faithful a sense of personal responsibility for the Church’s mission.”
In the midst of his extremely busy trip to the United States – the Pontiff decided to relax at the Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
After a brief rest, Pope Francis was back at it. He spoke with several inmates at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility before he took to his famous Popemobile en route to Independence Hall.
There, he encouraged the Hispanic population living in the states to persevere.
“Do not feel discouraged by all the challenges and hardships you might face. I ask you not to forget that like those who came here before you, you bring many gifts to this new nation of yours.”
Following his speech at Independence Hall, it was time for the Holy Father to take center stage at the Festival of the Families.
Much to the delight of many in attendance, making the trip well worth it.
Karen D’Aquilante of Pennsylvania tells 47 ABC, “I am so excited. I can’t even believe I got tickets, I can’t believe that I’m here and the Pope is here.”
“I had the opportunity to come here and I get to spend the entire weekend just praying and enjoying the good community of our faith and church.” Said Nicole Coscio, who made the trip from New York.
In the day’s finale, the leader of the Catholic Church listened to stories from multiple families and performances from some big time acts before addressing the crowd at the festival of families.
“Before creating the world, God loved. Because God is love.”
If you hope to catch the Pope before he’s gone, you’d better hurry and get into the city.
He’s scheduled to depart for Rome Sunday night at 8.
