Sussex Central Shuts Down Laurel
The 2015 football season officially kicked off last night and possibly one of the most anticipated Henlopen match up was between the Sussex Central Golden Knights and the Laurel Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs were coming off of a great season with a run to the state title game, but could they do the same this year? Also, the Golden Knights added senior transfer, Ki’Ante Sturgis, to their backs – how would he fit in with the run game? It didn’t take long to figure out what Sturgis will be capable of this fall — the transfer carried the ball 10 times for 113 yards. However, he wouldn’t be the only one contributing — Cory McCary had 9 carries for 75 yards, and Fulton Holland helping clean up the rest with a touchdown to help the Golden Knights get a big win at home over Laurel.
The Bulldogs are dealing with filling spots after graduating a few stud athletes, but it seemed like the turnover would be seamless with junior quarterback, Perez Nichols. Last night, Sussex Central shut out Laurel with a 21-0 win keeping the Bulldogs off the board despite some big penalties for the Bulldogs.
The Golden Knights proved they will be a tough team to compete with in the Henlopen, while the Bulldogs will have to clean things up. It is still very early on, but Sussex Central made a statement on Friday night as they look to get win number two next week on the road against Interboro.
Laurel will hit the road again taking on St. Elizabeth High School at Baynard Stadium at 7:00 pm.
