Striking out hunger on Delmarva

September kicks off Hunger Action Month, and just in time for Perdue farms to finish their 2015 Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva. The challenge involves three local food banks; the Maryland Food Bank, the Food Bank of Delaware , the Eastern Shore Branch of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia  and the Delmarva Shorebirds.

The challenge began in April. Perdue has issued a $15,000 challenge grant to benefit the three food banks. Ten thousand of those dollars will be donated to the three food banks, but in order to receive that each food bank needs to raise an equivalent of 10,000 meals to obtain their portion of the money.

Kim Nechay, the Executive Director of Perdue say, “thus far they have raised over 130,000 meals so we are really proud of our initiative to raise these funds.”

As for the Shorebirds,  Perdue says they will donate $10 for every strikeout of an opponent at the shorebird’s 70 home games during the regular season. The Shorebirds can receive up to $5,000.

Chris Bitters, the General Manager for the Shorebirds says they  usually don’t have trouble meeting their end of the challenge. He is looking forward to announcing the results at their last home game on Wednesday.

Bitters, says, “It was not only to create an opportunity for us to showcase an event but also to invigorate the community and helping us as well as Perdue to raise awareness about the hunger.”
