Salisbury Council VP speaks on rent stabilization initiative

In the wake of Mayor Jim Iretons rent stabilization initiative, which is intended to give relief to families who have a hard time paying their rent, has brought upon many opinions, including the opinion of City Council Vice President Laura Mitchell. Mitchell says the proposal is flawed from an economic perspective and she does have concerns.

Mitchell tells 47 ABC it is disheartening that the topic is coming to the board now when they know there’s not enough time. Since it is an ordinance, which requires two readings, it takes a lot of time. She says although the idea is good, there are still many concerns.

Mitchell tells 47 ABC, “The idea of making people be more comfortable more able to afford their rent that’s great, is this the right method for doing that, we’ll have that discussion on the fifth.”

Mayor Ireton has said he plans to put $8 million back into the economy, but Mitchell says there already is money here through folks paying insurance, paying taxes, and extra work homeowners pay to have done on their homes. The city council meeting is set for October 5th.
