Runway construction underway at Salisbury Airport

The Salisbury Wicomico Regional Airport is set to get a brand new runway. Back in 2012, the airport finished a multi-phased, multiple-year reconstruction of their primary runway. That has since been finished, and now, it’s on to their secondary runway.

Their secondary runway, or the crosswind runway, is the shorter of the two runways and Airport manager Robert Bryant says it will not change length wise it will stay at 5,000 feet long. The things that will change? Pretty much everything else.

Construction workers have torn up original surface, material that the the U.S. Navy laid during World War II and are now set to lay out an 8 inch sub-base layer, another 8 inch layer of crushed rock and concrete mix, and on top of that, another 8 inches of asphalt.

47 ABC spoke with Airport manager Bob Bryant and he tells us, “The runway really became a safety issue. We are essentially building a new runway but in the exact location of the original runway.”

As far as who’s paying for the project, the Federal Aviation Administration is paying 90% of the total cost, the Maryland Aviation Administration is paying 5% and Wicomico County is paying the remaining half. The project is expected to be complete before winter time.
