Polk, Babic gather early MEAC honors

Only four games into the young season, the Hawks volleyball squad saw a pair of its players earn recognition from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Alana Polk (Houston, Texas) was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week while freshman Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) took home Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the conference today.

Babic finished with a total of 67 kills, 13 digs, six aces and two assist over four games in the Maroon and Gray tournament. She earned a .331 kill percentage and averaged 3.25 digs for the week. Her best performance came in a win over Rider Friday night where she recorded 21 kills, four aces and two digs in five sets. Babic’s efforts earned her tournament MVP honors.

Polk led the conference in kill percentage finished with a .413 for the weekend. She had a great performance with a win over Rider where she recorded nine kills, four blocks and had a .500 kill percentage in a five set victory over Rider, and also tied for the league lead in blocks with 12 over four matches. The Hawks sophomore shares player of the week honors with Hazel Ortiz-Rosado from the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.

In addition to their conference honors, Babic and Polk were named the UMES and Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athletes of the Week for the week ending August 31st. The duo and the rest of the Hawks compete again this weekend in the UMES Courtyard Classic and face Quinnipiac, Delaware State and North Carolina A&T State.
