Nanticoke Indians hold 38th annual Pow-Wow

The Nanticoke Indian Association kicked off day one of their two-day 38th annual pow wow Saturday.

The event, which is held on the powow grounds near 26800 John J. Williams Highway in Millsboro, De., showcases Native American culture. At the pow wow guests are treated to traditional Native American dances in the middle of the pow wow grounds, as well as food and shopping tents.

Association officials tell 47 ABC that contrary to popular belief almost every single dance has a meaning behind it and that the dances are not just for show.

47 ABC spoke with Nanticoke Chief William Daisey, who explained the significance of the pow wow.

“(The pow wow is) important to protect and preserve our culture, history and the pow wow gives us the opportunity to pass this on to young people as well and also non-natives because there are a lot of misconceptions out there about Native Americans,” Daisey said.

Daisey also told 47 ABC that the pow wow is chance to rekindle friendships and to see friends and family again. He said that over 40 tribes from across the United States made the trip to participate in the event.
