Mardela girls soccer holds on to win opener

As time ticked off the clock of a 2-1 game, a seemingly harmless corner kick turned into the game-securing goal by Kasey Goshorn in the 80th’ minute as Mardela girls soccer defeated Colonel Richardson 3-1, in American Corner on Wednesday night.

Kathleen Sann got the scoring started just 10 minutes into the game, when a beautiful pass from Goshorn found her in stride as she put one low past the keeper. With a 1-0 lead, Mardela kept up the attack, and was able to get their second goal on a miscommunication between the Colonels’ keeper and defender. Maddy Catlin would be the recipient of the reward, a goal, as the ball bounced off the keeper’s leg and into the net.

The Colonels stayed persistent in the game, keeper Janya Turner would play good defense on a number of Mardela advances. Their persistance would pay off near the 70th minute, when striker Annie Harris stole a pass in the Warriors’ defensive backfield and put it past Mardela keeper Megan Roy.

Mardela would close it out  with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game, when Sann returned the favor to Goshorn, finding her in the box, as Goshorn burried one past Turner.

Mardela hosts Parkside on next Wednesday while Colonel Richardson travels to Kent Island.
