Lewes resident who survived Amtrak crash receives visit from Sen. Carper

The evening of May 12th started out as a typical one for Matthew Morgan.

Working two jobs for Amtrak and MLB Advanced Media, the Lewes man was taking the Amtrak 188 train home after another long day at work.

However, things literally took a turn for the worst as the train sped to over 100 mph and derailed in Philadelphia.

“I got on the train, texted with my wife, fell asleep, woke up in the hospital.” Said Morgan.

His wife, Lisa, described the internal turmoil that ensued once she heard of the crash, “I had no idea of the extent of his injuries and the severity of some of them.” and “It was a stressful night, it was 4 hours I never want to relive.”

In the accident Morgan suffered a skull fracture, two broken legs, a broken hip, and a broken shoulder.

Injuries that have temporarily left him in an electronic wheel chair.

Morgan tells 47 ABC that he is using his road to recovery to set an example for his seven children.

“Being a dad of seven I strive to make sure that my kids see the resilience of that.”

His kids were a main talking point Thursday afternoon when Delaware Senator Tom Carper visited the Morgan’s at their home.

Senator Carper was also on the Amtrak 188 train but got off before it derailed.

“When we found out that Matt was here, one of our own, an Amtrak employee and a fellow passenger, I thought that this was someone we ought to see and I’m glad that we did.” Said Senator Carper.

With such a traumatic experience now behind him Matt is now focusing his efforts on getting back to life as he knew it and walking.

“It’s definitely a life change for me.” Says Matt, “You have to adapt, you know, it’s new.”

Morgan tells us that doctors have told him he will eventually make a full recovery.
