Handling offensive attire in school

Roughly twenty students in Virginia were suspended from school last week after wearing confederate flag attire.

The event has now sparked a conversation regarding what attire is deemed offensive in classrooms.

47 ABC spoke with an administrator with the Wicomico county school district on Thursday.  He says students have the responsibility to choose their attire and arrange their personal appearance, but it must abide by their dress code.

Micah Stauffer, the Director of Secondary Education says, “Students cannot wear attire that have inappropriate messages or symbols. They cannot wear attire that could lead to or cause a disruption in school.”

Administrators say if students in Wicomico County wear offensive attire, their parents will be called so they can change clothes. If a student refuses to change, we’re told further disciplinary actions would be taken.
