Experts explain why Facebook is common for hoaxes

Two hoaxes on social media, which include sharing false warnings, are making rounds on Facebook again.

According to social media expert, Dr. Haven Simmons of Salisbury University, Facebook is among the most common sites for hoaxes to happen.

Dr. Simmons says the social media site is no longer just for teenagers and college students. Instead, it’s grown in numbers of adult users since it first launched in 2004. The change in user demographic has apparently made it easier to get a message across.

“It’s not all about social life anymore. Facebook is used in major incidents…emergency management for example, to share information that could save lives.” Explains Dr. Simmons.

Facebook was founded in 2004 and reached a milestone of over one-billion users in 2012.
