Delaware facing possible eel fishing moratorium

A moratorium on eel fishing may be coming to Delaware waters soon if a federal agency finds the state failed to take steps to conserve them.

Officials from the National Fisheries Service are reviewing a referral from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission that found Delaware out of compliance with the interstate management plan for American Eel, whose numbers are depleting.

If the national agency determines Delaware was at fault then it will declare a moratorium on eel fishing in Delaware waters.

Officials say a decision will be made by September 18th.
