Assateague celebrates 50 years

Assateague Island celebrated their 50th anniversary  of becoming part of the National Seashore Saturday and Sunday.

The Assateague Island National Seashore was officially established back in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Since being named apart of the national seashore the barrier island has been managed by the National Park Service.

The island is one of largest and last surviving barrier islands contained coastal habitats where the nature is left to do what it pleases with little to no human contact officials say.
