UPDATE: Wife reportedly hit by husband in fatal Smyrna crash

Delaware State Police say they are investigating a fatal crash, where a woman was apparently run over by her husband in Smyrna.

According to reports, the incident happened just after 1:00 AM on South DuPont Boulevard – Route 13, at Holly Hill Drive, near the entrance to Holly Hill Estates.

According to Authorities, 46-year-old Michael Whitely, of Smyrna, was driving a 2005 GMC Savana box truck on Route 13, getting ready to turn left onto Holly Hill Drive, when his wife, 43-year-old Evelyn Whitley, jumped out of the passenger’s side door. Police say once Evelyn, was outside of the truck, she fell, and was hit by the right rear dual wheels, before Michael could stop the truck.

Evenly was pronounced dead at the scene.

Route 13 southbound at Carter Road was closed for about four hours during the investigation, but has since reopened.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit says they are continuing their investigation into the incident, and the reason behind Evelyn jumping out of the truck.
