Tubman Byway initiative launches in Camden

The Tubman Byway Initiative officially launched Friday morning in Kent County.

U.S. Small Business administration officials and state representatives were on hand for the launch.

The Byway marks on existing roadways some key spots along Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad. The locations are where she transported fugitive slaves to freedom from Maryland’s Eastern Shore on up through Delaware during the pre-Civil War Era.

The Initiative is a pilot program joining Byway-adjacent small businesses together in an effort to offer and promote incentives to travelers to visit.

Supporters believe folks will come for the history and in the process patronize local businesses.
