Target goes gender neutral

For years blue and pink have been the common way to distinguish between boys and girls, clothes and toys. But one retail store is going “color neutral”.

Target announced Friday that they will no longer use gender based signs in departments such as Toys, Home or Entertainment and bedding areas.

In those areas Target says signs will no longer feature suggestions for boys or girls,  just kids.

As for colors, Target is saying goodbye to the pink or blue  and yellow or green papers that back the walls of their shelves.

Target says you can expect these changes to start to happen over the next few months.

Locals, have mixed ideas about the change.

Some, like Jakota Herrings of Delmar, Md. agree with the change and think more retail stores should follow suit.

“I think it’s a great idea that way if a kid wants to get a particular toy he doesn’t feel constrained or weird about going into the opposite gender section to get it, or feeling like, well I shouldn’t do that because it’s a girls toy or boys toy,” Herrings said.

However others, like Sharpstown resident Randy Lowe, thinks Targets move is unnecessary.

“I feel like people get a little too carried away with all this sensitivity stuff, I think that it shouldn’t be that big of a deal,” Lowe said.

Target says they are working to find other areas of the store where they can get rid off gender based signage to help strike a better balance.
