OC community mourns loss of George Hurley

The Ocean City community is grieving after the death of former city council president and county commissioner George Murray Hurley.

Hurley was an Ocean City native. He attended Ocean City High School which was where town hall currently is.

Hurley continued his education at Salisbury State Teachers College and went on to be an educator at Stephen Decatur High School.

Hurley was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Company.

He passed away Sunday at the age of 80; but Mayor Richard Meehan says his legacy will live on.

Meehan goes, “George was the bridge between change. He knew new things were coming to Ocean City. He was very devoted to the town and it’s history. He was a big advocate for expansion and for bringing people here.”

Hurley will be laid to rest on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
