New Bennett Middle School gives students skills to be college ready

Delmarva gets a first look of the new Bennett Middle School. The new school is 1,061 square feet and can hold up to a capacity of 1,114 students. Construction for the building began back in 2013 and it will be fully functional by the first day of school.
One of the most noticeable changes as students walk into the facility will be the air conditioning that the old school did not have. Each grade level is separated by color coded wings in the building. The new facility includes a media center, a broadcast center, a gym, multiple computer labs, a track and field, a softball field, outdoor class rooms, and lots of in-class technology to enhance the overall learning experience.
Liza Hastings, the Bennett Middle School principal says, “I love giving tours. I love bragging about this building because it is amazing.”
Students are not the only ones that are excited about the improvements. Laverne Harmon, an art teacher at the old Bennett Middle School for thirty-seven years will continue in the new school before she retires next June.
Harmon says, “It’s perfect. It has everything I need, extra bulletin boards, extra storage.”
Hastings is extremely proud of the new improvements, but what she is most happy about is that her students will be graduating with the necessary skills to be college and career ready.
