La Esperanza, a helping hand in the community

After years of being sponsored by El Centro, this year Festival Hispano was sponsored by the large non-profit, La Esperanza, which is centered in Georgetown, Del.

El Centro handed over the reigns because of the festivals growth made it too large to handle, so the non-profit decided to let La Esperanza take the front seat.

La Esperanza provides free culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services in the areas of family development, immigration, victim services and education for the Hispanic community.

The non-profit was founded back in 1996  by three nuns,  Sister Rosa Alvarez, Sister Maria Mairlot and Sister Ascension Banegas, who were sent to the area from Washington D.C.

Alvarez spoke with 47 ABC at the festival and said that originally they only planned to stay one year in Delaware, but after seeing the need for their her and her sisters decided to stay and start the organization.
