Guns Down Minds Up

“Guns Down, Minds Up” was the name of a rally planned for Wednesday night in Salisbury in direct response to the recent murders of 17-year-old Rakim Russell and 21-year-old Dommeir Deshields.

Police still do not have a suspect or suspects in custody in Deshields’ case. Three young men were arrested for Russell’s murder on August 5th. The rally was put on by the Extraordinary League of Men; a group in Salisbury dedicated to outreach.

A representative with the group, who actually lives in the community where one of the fatal shootings took place, says the rally gives neighbors the opportunity to have an open forum to talk about their concerns.

Jermichael Mitchell, one of the organizers of the event says, “We’re talking about the murders. We’re talking about the destruction of our community. We’re talking about the lost minds in our community. There are a lot of things we can do as far as coming together as a community. If everybody does their part we can fix these problems.”

The rally is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Billy Gene Jackson Park in Salisbury.
