Fruitland man arrested for drug possession in Somerset Co.

One man has been taken into custody after an undercover operation in Crisfield.

According to Crisfield PD, around 2:00 AM Monday morning an undercover officer saw a man later identified as Warren “Skipper” Ward  Jr., 33 of Fruitland, standing against a wall in Somers Cove Apartments.

According to police, they were participating in an undercover operation in the Crisfield Housing Authority. Police say the area is known to be a high crime area.

Police say the officer was in plainclothes, but identified himself as an officer with his badge hanging on his neck. The officer apparently approached Ward and saw him urinating on the wall. Reports say Ward was asked to come to the police car so he could be given a citation. That’s when Ward apparently began to flee.

Reports say the officer chased Ward in the unmarked car and apparently saw Ward throw a bag containing a white substance to the ground. According to the report, the Ward would stop and when the officer tried to get out of his car, he would continue running. At one point, Ward was apparently running along side the car, hitting it with his hands. Police tell 47 ABC say Ward’s foot was run over at this point in the pursuit.

However, according to the report, Ward continued running and the officer chased him on foot. Police say Ward eventually stopped and fought the officer. At that point, police say the officer used pepper spray to subdue him and take him into custody.

Ward was taken to McCready Hospital for the pepper spray and was treated for a broken foot.

Police say the bag that Ward threw was recovered and was found to be 4.2 grams of crack cocaine. The drugs were apparently broken into pieces for distribution with a street value of $3,000.

Ward is being held on $50,000 bond. He faces numerous charges including second degree assault, indecent exposure, and CDS possession with intent to distribute.
