Dover PD partner with colleges for Heads Up Campaign

The Dover Police Department have partnered with local colleges in Delaware through a campaign entitled Heads Up. The goal is to keep young adults aware and stop distracted walking.
At the start of the school year, colleges will be providing information to incoming students through online and print materials, signs on campus, and social media to promote awareness of the dangers of distracted walking.
The risks are very similar to distracted driving. Road ID will also be offering discounted items to students as a part of the campaign.
In a Safe Kids world wide survey of 1,000 teens, 40 percent of them said they had been hit or almost hit by a car, bike, or motorcycle while walking.
Corporal Mark Hoffman says, “It’s extremely alarming. Luckily in Dover, we haven’t had too many incidences of pedestrians being struck. However, we did have one last spring. A Wesley student was struck and killed while she was changing music while jogging across the street near Silver Lake and that’s what really spurred this program.”
As of right now, the Dover Police Department have partnered with Wesley College, Wilmington University, and Delaware Technical and Community College in this campaign.
