DNREC provides fun, games and learning at DSF

The 2015 Delaware State Fair is full of fun and games, however Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) took the fair as a chance to incorporate fun, games and science all together for a learning experience.

For the second straight year DNREC set up their Fun House of Science, which DNREC official said provides an interactive way for fair-goers to learn a little more about their environment and the agency.

“What DNREC does affects everyone in Delaware and the fair is a chance for us to come out and explain to the public what DNREC is doing, what we’ve been doing this year and what we hope to be doing in the future,” said DNREC intern Rachel Rohm, who works in the fun house.

To add to the interactive experience, Rohm said they hand out game cards, which help people get the most out of each display at the exhibit.

“It’s kind of a way to make sure you’re grabbing the most important pieces of information from each station,” Rohm said.

Those who took the game card around to each exhibit for the full experience said that fun house was informative and interesting. One fair-goer was even shocked by something she found out.

“The thing that stood out to me the most is what could be in our drinking water. That is kind of scary because there’s a lot of bad things that can be in your water,” said 23-year-old Jessica Poist. She added that DNREC officials advised her to use a filter for all her drinking water.

Poist said she also learned that lawn clippings can be harmful to the environment because they can get into gutters and clog up sewers, eventually turning into algae.
