Councilwoman Downing speaks out on Pocomoke controversy

Monday in Pocomoke City the first city hall meeting was held since the controversial July 13th meeting, when media were not allowed in and tempers flared between the Mayor and residents.
It was over a month ago that tensions rose in the city after the former Chief of Police Kelvin Sewell was fired. Residents returned to city hall Monday night, still seeking answers as to why he was dismissed.
Residents started lining up at 5:45 p.m. so they could get a spot inside city hall when doors opened at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 meeting. The council room and waiting area were packed to capacity according to Pocomoke City Mayor Bruce Morrison.
Once the meeting started it seemed as though the community was ready to come together to start mending what they and the mayor said is Pocomoke’s tarnished image.
Despite that, Councilwoman Diane Downing says problems still remain in the city. Downing said there were race problems both in the city and on the council.
Downing also said that as right now the City Council is not unified and that she believes the council is waiting for her to give them a reason to vote her out of office.
