4-H preaches safety first at DSF

According to 4-H Youth Development the same way car accidents happen within a mile of your home, small tractor accidents with young kids usually happens right in the back yard. That’s why 4-H offered their small tractor competition for youth at the fair.

The competition is a three-folded one. First, contestants take a test and must inspect a small tractor to identify what works and what parts they need to aware of when the tractor is operational. Next, they take their skills to a small course to demonstrate they can operate a tractor safely. Finally, there’s another quiz where tractor parts are placed on a table and contestants must correctly identify what they parts are.
The whole point of the competition though according to 4-H officials, is safety first.

“It’s something that’s really important that they learn here through the program that we have to offer for them. How to safely operate the vehicle and operate the tractor and that’s what were able to provide for them,” said 4-H instructor and Delaware State Senator Ernie Lopez (D-6). “Those are the skills that they can learn here at a young age and carry with them for the rest of their life and that’s extremely important.”
