Tasting the crazy fare at the fair

With foods like chicken, fries, and funnel cakes, it’s rather easy to find your typical fare at the 2016 Delaware State Fair.

But if you look hard enough, you can find some of the most outlandish foods you may ever see, like the scorpion pizza served here Swain’s Fine Foods.

“I figured scorpion pizza has got to be well the most different thing out here, so we’re trying it and it’s working real good.” Said Jim Swain, a Florida native who takes his pizza trailer to different fairs across the country.

Swain tells 47 ABC that his main inspiration for topping pizza with crickets, mealworms, and scorpions, was so that he could set himself apart from other pizza vendors.

As I watched his process of making the pizza, I became more intrigued by the idea of scorpions on pizza.

After trying the pizza, I found that the scorpions were a crunchy, yet nice touch. With scorpion pizza crossed off of the list, my quest for odd foods wasn’t over.

A few minutes after trying Swain’s, I found myself at Chester’s Gators and Taters. There, Co-Owner Lee Cordova told me that his famous shark and gator kabobs, like Jim’s scorpion pizza, came about after he felt the need to be different.

“We wanted to be different. We wanted to stand out” And “Originally it was the shark first, and then we added the gator, and that took off like crazy.” said Cordova.

While he couldn’t tell me what ingredients were in his secret marinade, Cordova says that the mixture is the key to a good shark or gator kabob.

After trying it, I couldn’t agree more.
