Sen. Carper meets with Greener Solutions to discuss prevention of avian influenza

Senator Tom Carper was in Millsboro this morning visiting the company Greener Solutions.
That company uses a freezer system rather than composting for routine poultry mortality to store the chickens. The chicken remains are later used to create manure to be used for biofuel and other commodities.
Officials say storing the bodies of the chickens in a freezer prevents the spread of the avian flu because flies and scavengers, such as vultures and raccoons, no longer can access the carcasses. It’s a practice that is being adopted here on Delmarva.
Senator Carper says that’s a good thing, “This is the gift that keeps on giving not only does it reduce the likely hood that we’ll see avian influenza come here or at least spread here,” says Carper “This is also something that will clean up the quality of our environment”.
For farmers looking to begin using this process, the federal assistance for funding is available via the farm bill.
