Milford Councilman “Skip” Pikus laid to rest

Milford Councilman James Burk says, “He was Mr. Milford.”
Hundreds of people crowded the Rookery Golf Course Thursday, to honor the life and legacy of Milford Councilman S. Allen “Skip” Pikus. He died on Monday, July 6th at the age of 74.
Ronnie Rogers, the former mayor of Milford says, “You can see by today how popular he was and how nice he was.”
Pikus started his political career in 1973. Among other ventures, he had three stints on the Milford City Council, and even served under now Vice President Joe Biden when he was senator.
Funeral goers told 47 ABC he touched many lives. Governor Jack Markell goes on, “I met Skip right when I first started getting involved in politics years and years ago. He was one of the first people I met in Milford. I went into his shoe store and he told me about Milford and shared a lot of stories. He was just an amazing guy.”
Burk continues, “I wouldn’t be a councilman if it wasn’t for Skip. I was on the planning commission and Skip taught me everything he could about local government. He inspired me.”
However, Pikus wasn’t all politics. We’re told he was a man of the community. He took over his father’s shoe shop in downtown Milford back in the 1950’s. Friends say he fit shoes for almost everyone in town.
Bryan Shupe, the current mayor of Milford says, “You could ride by and see him waving to you and waving to others. It was funny if you were new to the area you would think he was just being nice. He really knew all those people.”
We’re told those characteristics are what many will miss. People close to Councilman Pikus say he battling cancer up until his death. His family is asking anyone who wants to honor him, to make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
