Hacked: 47 ABC phone system

47 ABC’s phone system was hacked on the Fourth of July. We’re extending a tip to viewers, so the same won’t happen to you.

According to Sean Maloney, the president of Maloney Telecom Incorporated, phone hacking has become somewhat of an epidemic. He says this is particularly true for hotels and larger businesses.

Apparently, hackers are getting into the phone’s voice server which is connected with voice mail systems. The server can be accessed remotely. If it’s not protected by a password, it can be hacked. This allows a criminal to create an out dial that can call another number; often internationally.

Maloney continues, “They’re doing business abroad with another scam. They’re utilizing your telephone lines in order to access it. They don’t pay the long distance fee charges. In some cases they’re selling it to other bad guys or they’re using it for personal to reach family and friends.”

Maloney says if you have any phone system, new or old,  it never hurts contact your IT or telecom provider to make sure your lines are password protected.
