Federal education funding at risk for Maryland

Millions of dollars are at risk for eastern shore schools, according to U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski.

Mikulski’s office says an amendment sponsored by North Carolina Senator Richard Burr would change the Title I funding formula in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, resulting in a cut to federal funding for public schools. Grants under Title I aim to help schools close the achievement gap and provide a quality education to every child, no matter their zip code.

Officials say there are 24 school districts in Maryland and 400,000 public school students. Officials say about 45% of those students are eligible for Title I funding.

Here is a list at how much funding each Eastern Shore county could lose:
Caroline County – $336,000
Dorchester County – $372,000
Kent County – $124,000
Queen Anne’s County – $207,000
Somerset County – $240,000
Talbot County – $200,000
Wicomico County – $982,000
Worcester County – $359,000

A vote on the amendment is expected this week.
