Cover crop grant deadline approaching

Maryland farmers who want to plant cover-crops to prevent soil erosion and want state money to help pay for it have until Wednesday to apply.

The program run by the Department Of Agriculture provides grants to help farmers offset seed, labor and equipment costs associated with planting cover crops on their fields.

According to the MDA, cover crops are one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent nitrogen and phosphorus from entering the Chesapeake Bay.

This year, the state has granted about 22 million dollars for the program.
