UPDATE: Anthrax sent to DE lab was live

Officials with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reportedly informed the Division of Public Health that the anthrax sample that had been sent to a private lab was live.

The sample was apparently expected to be inactive, but Officials reportedly found that bacteria grew on the culture, indicated that it was live. The live bacteria is reportedly minor, and apparently significantly less dangerous than anthrax with a higher concentration.

Officials say since the May 23 incident, where the lab received the sample, they treated it as it was alive. Several employees, including the apparently only person who had direct contact with the anthrax, have been on antibiotics for over a week.

According to the CDC, the low level of live bacteria poses minimal risk to most people. DPH says they are working closely with the CDC on decontamination procedures and strategies, and is expected to be wrapped up this week. There is reportedly no danger to the public.
